Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Pryor writes to Letcher, Governor of Virginia. Recommends Colonel George C. Cabell (possibly George Craighead Cabell), for the position of paymaster for the Virginia forces. Of Cabell, Pryor writes, "He is a gentleman of the highest character... and is besides an officer of skill an experience."

Pryor became a Confederate Brigadier General in April 1862.
