Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Seymour writes, "I deem the club system of the Union Democracy, now being organized by Mr Spencer & his associates in this & other States, to be very useful & necessary for the success of our cause. I am informed that the work has been sent to your county & I hope you will find it expedient to organize clubs in all your towns & that you will use your influence & energy for that purpose."

Seymour was active in New York politics, serving as Governor of New York State 1853-1854 and 1863-1864. He was the Democratic presidential candidate in 1868 (Seymour lost the election to Ulysses S. Grant).
