Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs [Cleman?] "by the decision of the secy of State- All States Printing belongs to the Post (States Printers) You will therefore send your printing to that office. You will also cause a notice to be forward to all other parties who have printing done on behalf of the State, to the same effect." Written on State of Rhode Island Executive Department stationery.

Sprague was Governor of Rhode Island 1860-1863 and United States Senator 1863-1875. William H. Seward served as United States Secretary of State 1861-1869.
