At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

SMITH, Richard, (1735-1803), Delegate from New Jersey;; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1762 and practiced in Philadelphia, Pa., and later in Burlington, N.J.; commissioned county clerk of Burlington on December 7, 1762; Member of the Continental Congress from July 23, 1774, to June 12, 1776, when he resigned; member of the State council in 1776; elected treasurer of New Jersey and served from 1776 to February 15, 1777, when he resigned; moved to Laurens, N.Y., in 1790 and thence to Philadelphia in 1799.
