Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Flag Officer Farragut to Wales as Surgeon on the USS "Colorado." Commands him to take charge of the hospital at Pilot Town and to make arrangements for the comfort of the sick and wounded. He is allowed to take any of the houses, furniture, or appliances as needed. Forwarded by Captain T. Bailey. 2 black and white bust engravings of Farragut included.
