Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Suggests giving a dinner to bring together two acquaintances to discuss a matter previously mentioned between O'Conor and Marsh. O'Conor wishes Marsh to speak with this Boston friend before making a final decision.

O'Conor was United States district attorney for New York in 1853 and 1854. An extreme States' Rights Democrat, he opposed the coercion of the South. After the Civil War he became senior counsel for Jefferson Davis on his indictment for treason and was one of his bondsmen. Marsh was a New York lawyer and orator and one-time law-partner of Daniel Webster.
