Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Apologizes for interrupting Senator Edmunds during a senate debate in order to do an interview. Explains that there was a misunderstanding over whether or not Edmunds was engaged in the debate.

Waite was Chief Justice of the United States 1874-1888. Edmunds was a senator from Vermont.
