Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses some matters involving vouchers in his possession chargeable to the United States. Addressed to Nicholas as Comptroller General.

Rittenhouse, an astronomer, also served as Pennsylvania state treasurer 1777–1789, and Director of the U.S. mint 1792–1795. Nicholas was possibly John Nicholas, a lawyer and Representative from Virginia.
