Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks James for his support and care of William Dundas (Isabella's son) and discusses the arrangement, which was for William's education. Indicates that William had recently travelled home for vacation. Discusses their brother (her brother-in-law) George's appointment to a naval position on a ship. A note on p. 4 asks that this letter be forwarded to Agnes.

Isabella Dundas, daughter of William Robertson of Richmond, married David Dundas, a doctor who was appointed Sargent Surgeon to King George III in 1791, in 1774.
James Dundas was a lawyer in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Isabella's brother-in-law.
