Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox signs as Secretary of War. Writes "The want of instructions to Harleman was indeed an omission- No more stores are to be sent to Georgia at present. The returns of Clothing forwarded to the frontiers is enclosed. You will please to return it after copied. I am glad to learn your health- I am also well... " Written in the War Department.
