At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

J. Henry Flitner writes to his sister about the preperations being made to make the ship ready to set sail. Flitner states that the ship has been loaded with provisions and would be ready to set sail the next day and that their next destination should take between 60 and 100 days.
