At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mr. Taylor informs Mr. Burke that General Lee cannot approve the transfer of any man without consultation of commanding officers, and further review of military regulations. There is no specific reference to a soldier whose status may be in question, however. Suggested steps to obtain a transfer are included.
