At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

[niece] Judging by the handwriting, it is probable that it is a young girl. Presumably it is written to Miller A. Wright, though his name does not appear anywhere on the letter. Sentimental description of home life. Mother is making Grandpa a "pear" of gloves. "Don't you want a pair?" the writer asks. She and the other children "send…(Miller)…a kiss-and want to see…(him)…soon.'
