Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

[quoted in entirety] "The bearer Col. Wright-I learned today is about to be sent to Johnson's Island as prisoner of war-from what I learn of officers here, he is entitled to more consideration than most confederate officers. Any kindnesses bestowed will not be misapplied or abused." It seems that a friend of Miller's knew some one who might have had some control over his fate.
