At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

C. E. tells Miller that a man he has recently gotten in touch with about some business is a worthwhile investment. A "splendid man," he says. He also adds some notes on domestic life. Miller is to look after Maggie, for "she is quite childish in ways, and is liable to do something on this account".
