At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The heading reads "Capt. Miller A. Wright" (Miller is referred in accordance with his actual military rank of Colonel in all other correspondence after his promotion). Mr. Hudgins was remarkably unaware of the status of the man who he comfortably addresses as "Dear Comrade". Letter notifying Miller that there will be no change of date for the "reunion," presumably one for civil war veterans. Other information concerning the reunion is also provided.
