Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appoints Luman Burr to the position of sutler (someone who supplies provisions) for the prisoners of war at Camp Douglas. Signed as Brigadier General commanding the Post of Chicago. Orme was promoted to brigadier general in November of 1862. He resigned due to ill health in April of 1864.
