Outlines the debts he has paid for Jones. Reports the activities of Companies C, E, and J. Asks Jones to provide his family with a hospital tent. Includes a postscript acknowledging receipt of five dollars for Jones for rifles. Addressed to Lieut. W. E. Jones, Mounted Riflemen, Fort Ewell, Texas.
Hatch graduated from West Point in 1845 and was commissioned to the Infantry. Served in the Mexican War under Zachary Taylor at Palo Alto. Transferred to the Mounted Rifles under Winfield Scott. Served on the frontier with several Indian engagements. Promoted to Captain, October 1860. Appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers in command of a cavalry brigade, where he executed a series of raids on the Rapidan and Rappahannock Rivers. In command of Hooker's troops at Antietam until he was wounded. Breveted Major General of Volunteers; received a medal of honor. Returned to the field in 1863, when he commanded various departments in the South. Worked closely with Sherman in the Georgia-Carolinas Campaign. Following the Civil War, served on the frontier for 26 years. Retired from the Army in 1886.
