Written as President, Grant asks Eastin to reconsider his resignation from the office of Special Sergeant of the Police Department. Grant's father, Jesse, constantly sought advantage from his son's positions and placed him in difficult positions.

Grant's presidency (1868-1876) was marked by a punitive Reconstruction policy and favorable legislation for commercial and industrial interests. Grant was often associated with disreputable politicians and financiers.

Sept. 7th 1872
My Dear Mr. Eastin
Your letter of Sept 4th tendering your resignation of the office of Special Agt. of the P.O. Dept. is received with your reasons therefor [sic]. Please allow me to ask you to reconsider. I regret that my father should in any way interfere with the management of the office and will ask him to desist and send in his resignation. He can never [2] be fit to the charge of the office again.
Very Truly Yours
U. S. Grant
