Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addressed to "the Adjutant General of the United States." Encloses letters and report [not included] of Provost Marshal Major Beard of the New York Volunteers. Beard delivered the letters to Sherman's headquarters while Sherman was absent on a reconnaissance. Refers to a seized vessel.

Edward Davis Townsend served as the Adjutant General of the United States during the Civil War.
