Addressed to Tourtelotte as Major, 7th U.S. Cavalry. Comments upon his retirement three months earlier. " ... I feel that the End which we have so long contemplated has at last come, and looking at it in a Common Sense view it is better this than a first Class funeral." Responds to Tourtelotte's desire for Sherman to hire a clerk. He says that presently he does not need one as he can still write well. But assures that he will apply to the War Department for a clerk should the correspondence become too much. Writes that he has plenty of money and mentions a real estate boom happening in the area. Urges Tourtelotte not to resign his position in the Army as chances for promotion in the cavalry are good. Praises Tourtelotte's values and his past service.
