At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Diary covers activity of the 62nd regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, with roll of company M and daily entries. Includes detailed account of action at Gettysburg, mentioning Gen. Reynold's death and the fight for the wheat field (2 July 1863 entry). Contains list of arms and accoutrements including clothing.

Born in Philadelphia, Garden enlisted as a carpenter at the age of 20, 9 August 1861. He was mustered in as a sergeant in Company M, 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry, 1 September 1861. Reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 15 February 1864. Transferred to the Pennsylvania 91st Regiment. Promoted to first sergeant. Assigned to 5th Corps hospital, then to Brigade Headquarters. Discharged at Washington, D.C., 20 September 1864.
