Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Campbell, the Confederate Assistant Secretary of War, asks Wellford for information on John Carfoot, a prisoner discharged 3 January 1863. Gives the reason for the inquiry: "The British Consul has demanded satisfaction on account of his desertion & the evidence against him should be collected." Written on Confederate War Department stationery.
