At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bulkley, Captain's Clerk on board the Wabash, reports to Mercer, commander of the Wabash. Records details of the 28 and 29 August capture of Forts Hatteras and Clark, located on the Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina. Reports times when firing occurred, details related to the actions of other ships in the squadron, and orders received. The Wabash was the flagship of the Atlantic Blockading Squadron, commanded by Silas Horton Stringham.
