Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Blackwell asks Livingston if he may retrieve some items that his wife left at Livingston's home a few months ago. The letter is followed by a statement by Jacob Timerman, who acknowledges receiving the goods from Livingston in Blackwell's name. Dated 12 February 1713, Manor of Livingston.
