Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The letter describes mounting tensions with Spain and France, and notes that trade will be significantly altered if war breaks out. Marked as a copy, and precedes another letter dated 10 October 1739. In the second letter, Storke informs Livingston of the accounts he has forwarded and other similar financial information.
