At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Preceded by a copy of a letter from 17 May 1744, in which DeWitt writes that the Oswego has arrived safely at Charlestown, S.C. In the current letter, DeWitt states that he will check on the Oswego's cargo, which has unfortunately arrived at a poor time. Docketed on address leaf.
