Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Philip gives his condolences for the death of their mother, and hopes "that tho' this great bond of Union is Broake yet the same Brotherly Affection & Friendship that has so remarkably persisted between us all, may continue as Long as Life." He also asks that Robert, Jr. send down his sloop that that their mother may be taken to the Manor and buried along side their father.
