Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Robert, Jr. authorizes John Wigram to enter the house of the late Andries Bartle and distrain goods to the amount of 48 pounds for overdue rent. He then states that if payment is not made by the 1st of January next, Wigram is to appraise and sell the goods, and then to dispose of the money in a specified manner.
