Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the obvious impossibility of his taking an oath swearing that he did not help or support the Southern troops during the war. Argues that he knows many people who have received appointments and must not have taken the oath. Reiterates his desire for his father's help in obtaining work. Mentions matters of local politics and refers to Albert Gallatin Brown and Governor William L. Sharkey.
