Witherspoon signed twice, once in text and once in the endorsement on the verso. Countersigned by Robert Pettett Jones and John Beatty. Certifies payment of 16 pounds, 16 shillings for Witherspoon's attendance for 28 days as a member of the assembly of Somerset County, New Jersey.
Witherspoon was a member of the Continental Congress from New Jersey 1776-1782 and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The year on the document is partially obscured. 1791 is the corrected date noted in the collateral files. Originally dated as 1779 on the certificate of authenticity.
