Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Moore writes as aide-de-camp to Union General Joseph Hooker, who commanded forces at Chancellorsville. Reports troop movements, the repair and creation of roads, weather, and military skirmishes. Mentions the names of some participating commanders, including Hooker, Winfield Scott Hancock, and Darius Nash Couch. Written in Headquarters Second Army Corps stationery.

The Chancellorsville Campaign lasted from April-May 1863; the Battle of Chancellorsville lasted from 30 April to 6 May, and resulted in a Confederate victory.
