Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Paymaster General of the Army indicates that he has sent (not included) "some remarks on your Accounts for payment made in part to Joseph Frost for timber, which cannot pass to your Credit untill his account is paid in full & transmitted to me." Written from the "Accountants Office."

Joseph Howell had served in the American Revolution, when the Constitution was passed he became Paymaster General of the Army, with the rank of Major. He held the office until his death.
Captain John Bryant was the Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
