Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Advertising the terms under which his slaves may be hired out for the upcoming year. Some of the slaves belong to General J. H. Cocke, the others to the estate of Thomas Winn. Signed twice by John Winn. Docket lists the names and prices of the slaves available to rent, and the names of the men who hired them.
