Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Urgently requests a promotion and to be stationed in Baltimore, so he may be close to his ailing wife.

During the Civil War, General Miles would command 12,000 at Harper's Ferry; he was forced to surrender once faced with General Stonewall Jackson's force. Miles was mortally wounded during the skirmish.
