Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Commander Patterson to Lieutenant Commander Barnes of the Naval Academy. As the newly elected treasurer of the Branch United Naval Association of the U.S. Navy Yard at Norfolk he is forwarding the names of members who have paid dues. Wants to know if the books and postage stamps to transact the business of society will be provided by Barnes.

Rear Admiral Thomas H. Patterson served in the United States Navy and saw action in the American Civil War and later served as the Commander, Asiatic Squadron. His commands included Chocura, Currituck and James Adger. Richmond served as his flagship on the Asiatic Squadron. Patterson retired from the Navy in 1883.
