Written by Belknap as Commandant of the U.S. Navy Yard at Mare Island, California. Tells Patrick his request was forwarded to him and that he will do whatever he can to assist with it. Written on letterhead of the Commandant's Office. Letter is mounted on a larger sheet of paper.
Born in Newport, New Hampshire, Belknap was appointed a Midshipman in 1847. He commanded Canonicus during the attacks on Fort Fisher, and Hartford during the Formosa Expedition of 1867. Appointed Rear Admiral 12 February 1889, he retired 22 January 1894. Rear Admiral Belknap died at Key West, Florida, 7 April 1903.
