Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bope writes to his parents from a camp in Louisville. Discusses the trip from Camp Dennison, near Cincinnati, Ohio. States he does not know how long they will stay before moving on to Alabama. Mentions the change in weather and how green the woods are.

Abraham Bope enlisted on 2 January 1862 in Ohio as a private. He was mustered into "K" Co., Ohio 61st Infantry.
