Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter introducing herself to Albert GIllett as a possible wife. Tells him "I am of an affectionate nature, a great lover of home. I like to keep a house nice. I would like to keep my husband clean & nice & to keep my own self clean & tidy...I like to trust & to be trusted to love & be loved." Informs him that she has two girls and is currently working, but would quit her job if he would like. Inquires as to whether or not he has children. Asks him to send a picture of himself.

No connection has been made between Etta Summers, Albert Gillett, and the Goold soldiers who wrote the previous letters in this collection. They could possibly be later relatives of the family.
