Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to his mother, probably from Burlington, Vermont. Discusses the delay with his pay in great detail and informs her she will have to "hire" the money for a land purchase. Advises her to take a mortgage on the oxen. Comments on the weather and on his living quarters. States there are many deserters coming into their lines.

Henry enlisted on 27 August 1861 in Vermont as a private. He mustered into "I" Co., Vermont 5th Infantry.
