Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to his aunt from outside Richmond. Mentions that he sent her a Harpers monthly magazine. Reports the weather is warm and the roads are good. Expects to move to Richmond soon.

Henry enlisted on 27 August 1861 as a private. He was mustered into "I" Co., Vermont 5th Infantry.
