Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that they have gone on picket duty on the South side of the James River, one week before Harrison's Landing was evacuated. Details that they have been ordered to reinforce General John Pope's army at Rappahannock Station. Describes a battle, noting that his troops were commanded by General Irvin McDowell, who "made a regular piece of botched work out of it." Notes that General John Reynolds, "whose got command of the Division brought us up to time..." States that he is glad General George McClellan is in command. Written in pencil.

Robert Terry enlisted on 4 June 1861 as a Private. He was mustered into "K" Co. PA 36th Infantry. He was discharged on 27 April 1865.
