Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from J.M. Cranford to Frances Davenport dated June 9, 1864. Apologizes for the delay in replying to her but informs her that he has just gotten out of hospital. Says that Dr. Stevens called to see him and he gave him all the information that he had on the death of her husband George Davenport.
