Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from H.H. Thomas to Frances Davenport dated June 19, 1864. Tells Frances that now, with the Official Army and Navy Journal before him and the name of his oldest and best friend midway among the slain, he can no longer doubt that her husband and his dear friend "sleeps the sleep that knows no waking."
