Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from W. McAdam to Frances Davenport dated June 28, 1864. Describes seeing George Davenport in hospital and says that he was occasionally conscious but his speech was incoherent. Was given orders by the general to take care of his watch and make sure that it got to the right place.
