Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his brother-in-law giving him updates on different members of the community. Reports on the whereabouts of Joseph, his son's, military regiment. Describes a battle that Joseph wrote to him about, which involved General William Nelson, writing that "the Bullets flew like hail and one of them came so close that it skinned his nose." Letter is incomplete and unsigned.
