Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs his brother-in-law that Joseph, his son, has been sick and is at home getting well. Mentions that "the boys feel a great reluctance in going to Camp Thomas to be drilled to be sent to fight the Indians. They think the U.S. Government has no control over them."
