Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the recent elections with his cousin, writing "I gave my opinion when you said that I was not with the Democratick Party Democracy - a pure Government offered by the Servants of the People. Is there any such Party - if so I have not found it in a Search of Twenty years."
