Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Relates to his brother that he is very relieved to hear that he has not been killed, as he has received word that Colonel Hawkins was killed and General Horatio Van Cleve's Division "suffered terribly." Tells him that "I think your Commanding Officers should not hesitate a moment in accepting your resignation."
