Writes from the "Rear of Vicksburg," reporting that "little firing has been done for several days on either side. We are just lying here keeping the Rebs. in & tormenting them once in a while with a few Shells. It is hard to tell when they will be willing to surrender but I don't think they can hold out very long."

Joseph Maitland enlisted on 8 August 1862 as a private. He was mustered into "G" Co. OH 95th Infantry. He was mustered out 31 May 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee. Maitland served in the May-July 1863 Vicksburg Campaign, in which Union forces led by Grant forced Confederates to surrender the city.
